In 1955 Juan Manuel Fangio won his third drivers championship with Sterling Moss second, both in Mercedes. However the season was overshadowed by an accident at the LeMans Grand Prix that killed over 80 people. Four races were subsequently cancelled and motor racing has not returned to Switzerland. The British Grand Prix moved to Aintree for the first time and was won by Mike Hawthorn. Alberto Ascari had an accident in Monaco and ended up in the harbour and shortly afterwards was killed in an accident in testing at Monza.
