The 1984 season was the first of a number of successful seasons for McLaren. Niki Lauda and Alain Prost battled for the championship with Niki Lauda winning by half a point. McLaren won the constructors championship by a large margin. All the teams were using turbo powered cars except Tyrell, who were disqualified from the championship for irregularities at the Detroit race.
