Lusail International Circuit, Qatar circuit details

The Qatar circuit hosted its first F1 GP in 2021 as the third night race of the season. The circuit was developed as a motorcycle track and is a fast flowing track. Overtaking in the first race was easier than expected. There was not race in 2022 due to the world cup but the race returned in 2023. The track was resurfaced in between the two races. After practice in 2023 Pirelli had concerns about the tyres leading to changes in the track limits and restrictions on the number of laps tyres could be used for.

2024 Sprint

Race winner: Oscar Piastri McLaren
Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Oscar Piastri won the sprint race from team mate Lando Norris. Max Verstappen took pole position for the main race and won from Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri. Lando Norris finished 10th after a stop/go penalty for not slowing under yellow flags.

2024 Race

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Due to safety concerns over tyres, the track limits on a corner were changed and tyres could be used for a maximum of 18 laps in the race. The wind caused problems with drivers exceeding track limits shuffling the grid for both races. Oscar Piastri won the sprint race for his first race win in his first season in F1. Max Verstappen won the race after starting in pole position followed by the two McLaren's. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton clashed on the first lap leading to Lewis Hamilton retiring, but George Russell recovered from the back of the field to finish 4th.

2023 Sprint

Race winner: Oscar Piastri McLaren
Oscar Piastri won the sprint race from from pole position ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull and Lando Norris in the other McLaren.

2023 Race

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Max Verstappen won from pole position ahead of the two McLaren's of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The race was run in very hot conditions causing physical distress to the drivers.

No race due to the FIFA World Cup being held in Qatar

2021

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton won comfortably from pole position in the first race in Qatar. Max Verstappen was second after a stating 7th from a 5 place grid penalty. Fernando Alonso was third, his first podium in Hungary in 2014. After a poor start Valtteri Bottas was fighting back but he was one of several cars that suffered tyre failures on a one stop strategy.
