James Hunt

James Hunt career

James Hunt raced with Hesketh in F2 and F3 where he gained a reputation as "Hunt the Shunt" after several crashes. The Harvey Postelwaite designed Hesketh F1 car was competitive in James Hunt's hands and was the last of the privately funded teams. Financial problems with Hesketh at the end of 1975 left James Hunt without a drive. He was then signed by McLaren and won the 1976 Drivers Championship in what was a controversial season. He struggled in the following two seasons with McLaren and then retired in 1979. He is remembered as being an unconventional driver and the last of the drivers with a real playboy life style. He was very popular with the British public and this was helped by his style as a TV commentator. He died at the age of 45 having struggled with depression and alcoholism.
