In the 1960's Honda ran a team with a first race win in 1966 in Mexico City and a second in Italy in 1967. After they had pulled out as a team Honda returned to F1 as an engine supplier between 1983 - 1992 during which time Honda powered cars won 6 constructors championships, 5 drivers championships and 71 GP victories. Honda returned to F1 in 2000 as an engine supplier.
In 2004 Honda bought part of BAR and at
the end of the 2005 season Honda bought the
remaining stake in BAR to race as a full
works team from 2006 with Jenson Button winning one race this year, but in 2007 the team
failed to produce to competitive car. Ross Brawn arrived at Honda for
the 2008 season and the team hoped he would bring his winning ways from Ferrari, however 2008 was a difficult season for them with both drivers stuggling for pace in qualifying and in the race. In December 2008 Honda announced it was pulling out of F1 and in early 2009 the team was purchased by Ros Brawn and rebranded as Brawn GP.
