Ken Tyrell started as a racing driver before founding the team and was responsible for giving Jackie Stewart his break into F1. Success came early to the team, wining the constructors and drivers championship in 1971 and Jackie Stewart the drivers championship again in 1973. After this the team failed to maintain the same level of competitiveness, despite such innovative ideas as as the 6 wheeled car. The team was sold in 1998 to BAT, to become the BAR team.
