Tony Vandervell was one of the original backers of BRM, but set up on his own when he got frustrated with BRM. Success started to come in 1956 with a Colin Chapman designed chassis and in 1957 Sterling Moss was the first British driver of a British car to win the British Grad prix in the modern era. After one of his drivers died in an accident, Vandervell left and the team did not make the change to a rear engine design.
