Peter Sauber had success in sports car racing, including Le Mans with backing from Mercedes, before moving up into F1. Despite some early promise, the team has struggled especially when Mercedes moved its to support McLaren. It then used customer engines from Ford and more recently from Ferrari. At the end of 2005 the team was sold to BMW. As BMW the team was relatively successful with a second place in the constructors championship in 2007. At the end of the 2009 season BMW pulled out of F1 and sold their stake in the company back to Peter Sauber to run the team as Sauber for the 2010 season
