Hungaroring, Hungary circuit details

The circuit has been used since 1986 and is tight, undulating and narrow. With overtaking being difficult, it has the reputation of producing processional races but from the 2020's the racing has been more competitive with more overtaking.

2024

Race winner: Oscar Piastri McLaren
The McLaren's of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri started from the front row. Piastri was leading until the pit stops when McLaren moved Norris in front of him with the team then insisting Norris let Piastri through for the win. Lewis Hamilton finished third despite a coming together with Max Verstappen late in the race. The Red Bull was not the fasted car and left Max Verstappen frustrated and openly criticising the team.

2023

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Lewis Hamilton just took pole position ahead of Max Verstappen, but in the race Max Verstappen had a comfortable win and was Red Bull's 12th consecutive win beating McLaren's 11 in 1988. Lando Norris was second in the much improved McLaren. George Russell had a poor qualifying but came from 18th through to 6th. Ferrari continued their difficult season finishing 7th an 8th behind both McLaren's.

2022

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
George Russell took pole position ahead of the two Ferrari's. Max Verstappen won the race having started 10th with Lewis Hamilton second and George Russell third.

2021

Race winner: Esteban Ocon Alpine
This was Esteban Ocon's first F1 GP wins and the first for the Alpine branded team. A first lap collision took out Norris, Perez and Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton finished second after starting on pole with a different strategy after the first lap restart.

2020

Lewis Hamilton took pole position from Valtteri Bottas and the two Racing Point cars. Williams had both cars into the second part of qualifying for the first time since 2018. Lewis Hamilton won the race which was influenced by the strategy over tyre choice and when to change tyres. Max Verstappen finished just ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari had another difficult race with Vettel 6th and Leclerc 11th.

2019

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Max Verstappen took pole position and became the first Dutch driver to be on pole and also the 100th different driver to take pole position. Lewis Hamilton won the race adopting a two stop strategy over Max Verstappen's one stop and the fresher tyres allowed Lewis Hamilton to catch and overtake Max Verstappen. Sebastian Vettel was a distant third in a Ferrari.

2018

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton won from Sebastian Vettel despite Vettel having a coming together with Bottas. Bottas also had a coming together with Ricciardo. Ferrari could have won this race but a poor strategic call over a tyre pit stop for Vettel probably cost him the win.

2017

Race winner: Sebastian Vettel Ferrari
Sebastian Vettel took pole position ahead of team mate Kimi Raikkonen and the race finished with them in that order. Behind them Mercedes used team orders to try and catch them, but with Valtteri Bottas finishing ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen finished 5th despite taking his team mate Daniel Ricciardo out of the race on the first lap.

2016

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Nico Rosberg took pole position ahead team mate Lewis Hamilton, but in the race the order was reversed with Lewis Hamilton taking the win ahead of Nico Rosberg, who was comfortably ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull.

2015

Race winner: Sebastian Vettel Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton took pole position in 2015, but the Ferrari's of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen had better starts and took the lead on the first lap. Sebastian Vettel won the race and Kimi Raikkonen with problems in the power unit. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth after a number of errors and a drive through penalty. Red Bull had a good result with Daniil Kvyat second and Daniel Ricciardo third. The latter part of the race became more exciting after a front wing failure on Nico Hulkenburg's car led to a safety car. McLaren had their best race of the season so far with Fernando Alonso 5th and Jenson Button 9th.

Daniel Ricciardo won an exciting 2014 race from Fernando Alonso after rain, crashes and a safety car period meant changes to the planned strategies.

2013

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton won the 2013 race from pole position, his first race win for Mercedes. Kimmi Raikkonen continued his consistent season with second place from the two Red Bull's of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

2012

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton McLaren
Lewis Hamilton was in 2012 from pole position with Lotus taking second and third in the race.

2011

Race winner: Jenson Button McLaren
The 2011 race was won by Jenson Button on a drying track where tyre choice was a key factor affecting the race.

2010

Race winner: Mark Webber Red Bull
Mark Webber won the 2010 race after team mate Sebastian Vettel was given a penalty for an incident under the safety car.

2009

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton McLaren
In 2009 Lewis Hamilton won his first race of the season after Felipe Massa suffered from a freak accident in qualifying.

The 2008 race was notable for being the first win for Heikki Kovalinen.

2007

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton McLaren
Qualifying was controversial as Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton held each other up leading to Fernando Alonso having a grid penalty. Lewis Hamilton led every lap of the race despite almost constant pressure from Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari and they were comfortably ahead of third place Nick Heidfeld in the BMW.

2006

Race winner: Jenson Button Honda
The rain affected 2006 race was definitely exciting and finally gave Jenson Button his first F1 grand prix victory. He won a wet race despite starting in 14th place on the grid.

2005

Race winner: Kimi Raikkonen McLaren
Michael Schumacher took pole position but finished second well behind Kimi Raikkonen, and just ahead of Ralph Schumacher.

2004

Race winner: Michael Schumacher Ferrari
Michael Schumacher qualified on pole ahead of team mate Rubens Barrichello and these two drivers finished the race in the same order well ahead of third placed Fernando Alonso in a Renault.

2003

Race winner: Fernando Alonso Renault
Fernando Alonso won the race from pole position ahead of Kimi Raikkonen who started down in 7th place on the grid. They were followed by the two Williams of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher.

2002

Race winner: Reubens Barrichello Ferrari
Rubens Barrichello qualified ahead of team mate Michael Schumacher and they finished the race in the same positions, ahead of the Williams of Ralph Schumacher.

2001

Damon Hill won from second on the grid and this was his first F1 GP victory. Riccardo Patresse was second in a Benetton.
