Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Canada circuit details

The Canadian GP has been run in Montreal since 1978. Part street circuit and part race track, it is built around a lake on an artificial island in the St Lawrence Seaway. The track is a a mixture of tight corners (14 in total) and fast straights including the corner that leads to the wall of champions that has been the site of many accidents over the years. The circuit has produced some good races, but can be hard on cars.

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
George Russell took pole position ahead of Max Verstappen with exactly the same time. A wet and then drying track together with red flags made for a lively race. Max Verstappen won ahead of Lando Norris followed by the improved Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. Both Ferrari's failed to finish.

2023

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
Max Verstappen took pole pole position and won the race having led every lap of the race. This was Red Bull's 100th F1 victory and Adrian Newey's 200th victory.

2022

Race winner: Max Verstappen Red Bull
A wet qualifying mixed up the grid, with Max Verstappen taking pole position ahead of Fernando Alonso. In a dry race, Max Verstappen finished ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz who was followed by the two Mercedes. Charles Leclerc finished 5th after starting at the back of the grid due to engine penalties.

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
This was the 40th running of the race at this circuit. Lewis Hamilton took the win from Sebastian Vettel after Vettel was given a controversial penalty when the two of then came together. Charles Leclerc was third in the other Ferrari.

2018

Race winner: Sebastian Vettel Ferrari
Sebastian Vettel won in Canada from pole position ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen. This race was Vettel's 50thrace win and Alonso's 300th race.

2017

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton won from pole position, led every lap and had fasted lap ahead of team mate Valterri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo in a Red Bull.

2016

Race winner: Lewis Hamilton Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton won after taking pole position from Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas who took the first Williams podium of the season. Nico Rosberg had a difficult race after he came together early with Lewis Hamilton and then had a slow puncture late in the race. Max Verstappen continued his good start to the season with a solid fourth place.

2015

In 2015 Lewis Hamilton won from pole position from team mate Nico Rosberg, with Valtteri Bottas third for Williams and Kimi Raikkonen fourth despite a spin during the race. This was a comparatively uneventful GP with no safety cars.

2014

Race winner: Daniel Ricciardo Red Bull
In 2014 Nico Rosberg took pole position from team mate Lewis Hamilton and the two Mercedes cars dominated qualifying and the first half of the race. However when both Mercedes developed problems with their energy recovery systems and Lewis Hamilton retired with brake failure Daniel Ricciardo took his opportunity and overtook Nico Rosberg to win his first Formula 1 race. Jenson Button finished 4th, the best result for McLaren this season, after Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa had a coming together leading to a major accident with two laps left in the race

2013

Race winner: Sebastian Vettel Red Bull
Red Bull finally won in Canada in 2013 when Sebastian Vettel won from pole position from Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. Valtteri Bottas qualified the Williams in 3rd in a wet session but slipped out of the points in a dry race. Paul DiResta had a difficult qualifying but a one stop race gave him 7th place

2012

The 2012 race was decided on tyre strategy with McLaren’s two stop approach for Lewis Hamilton giving him the win from Romain Grojean and Sergio Perez after Red Bull and Ferrari tried a one stop approach.

2011

Race winner: Jenson Button McLaren
The 2011 race was wet, had numerous safety cars and a 2 hour red flag break for rain, but was one of the most dramatic F1 races. Lewis Hamilton crashed out of the race after a collision with Jenson Button, and Jenson Button was at the back of the field after one of the safety cars, but came through with a great dive and overtaking manoeuvres to win the race after forcing Sebastian Vettel into an error on the last lap.

The 2008 Canadian GP was notable for the first win for BMW and for Kubica and a bizarre pit lane accident when Hamilton ran into Raikkonen who had stopped at a red light at the end of the pit lane.

Juan Pablo Montoya took pole position but retired with engine failure. A mix of one and two stops plus a safety car allowed Michael Schumacher to take the win ahead of the McLaren of David Coultard and Reubens Barrichello's Ferrari.

Michael Schumacher took pole position ahead of brother Ralph Schumacher but in the race, Michael Schumacher took the win ahead of Ralph Schumacher with Mikka Hakkinen third.

Michael Schumacher took the race in controversial fashion after blocking another driver. There was a crash on lap 1 leading to a red flag and on the restart another crash leading to a safety car. Altogether there were 12 retirements during the race.

Michael Schumacher won having taken pole position. David Coultard had a comfortable lead until a clutch problem during a pit stop. The race was red flagged and stopped early due to Olivier Panis having a serious crash.
